On that fateful morning, January
21st, 2014, it was my first day at work. Noelle Events was a great
events planning company which every event planner wanted to work with. I had
just been given a job as the company’s senior advertiser having just finished
my NYSC program, a single lady with so much enthusiasm to succeed in life.
I sat down on the bench close to
the company’s secretary; her eyes were looking suspicious, like I wanted to
steal from her. I was sitting calmly though I was nervous within, the secretary
stood up and said to me “there is a guy seating on a back bench, reading a
newspaper, see him”.
‘’see him, for what?’’ those were
the words that crossed my mind, I stepped backwards, though I was a bit scared
I tried to pull courage and put myself in order. I got to him and greeted him
and he replied ‘’2.00pm, BELLA lounge, don’t miss”. That was all he said to me
and I was confused, who was he to give me such command?
“What? You mean if I don’t do it
I won’t get the job?” that was what ended the appointment I had with the
mystery man sitting on the backbench at BELLA lounge.
All through that night I was sad,
laying on the bed all alone with tears dripping down my eyes. How can I do such
a thing to get a job, what has our world turn into? How was I going to continue
with the payment of my mum’s treatment? How was I going to keep up with the
payment of my sibling’s fees at school? How was I going to live without a
source of income? These were the questions I asked myself. It was like I was
trying to make up my mind on committing suicide, I decided to go back to this
mystery man, having two things in mind, either to do it or beg for something
below the office of an advertiser, maybe a cleaner, so far I could help my
dyeing mum. What? There was no way I could commit such act, what would happen
after getting the job, he blackmailing me or turning me into an office whore?
The next day I woke up as early
as possible, took my bath, ate and set out for a mission, bringing back my
dyeing mum by fighting for my job as the advertiser to be of Noelle Events.
He tried luring me the second
time, I stood my ground, “I can’t “That was all I said to him and then
unexpectedly he smiled, he has never smiled to me.
Suddenly, I turned around, I
couldn’t believe my eyes, I was dumbfounded at what I saw, all the staffs of
Noelle Events were clapping, all putting on wonderful smiles and I was wondering,
“Why are they all clapping and laughing?”
“Congrats dear, it was just a
TEST, you’ve gotten the job” that was what the guy sitting on the back bench
reading a newspaper said to me.
